Tag-based Information Management in TaskTracer
Knowledge workers today increasingly depend on computers to manage their plans, workflows, learning and communication channel discussions. However, inefficient organization of these resources often causes user frustration and decelerates work progress.

In this thesis, I propose a tag-based desktop information management system where every information object is marked with one or more user-defined tags. This supports a Tag-based user interface that helps the user retrieve past objects and execute workflows using the tags on the objects.

To achieve these goals, I propose to i) design and implement an online learning agent that exploits implicit feedback, obtained by silently monitoring user activities, along with explicit user-corrections to predict tags on email messages, ii) augment a few desktop application UIs (e.g., Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Firefox) to facilitate tagging and tag-based information access, and iii) implement a tag-propagation system that automatically decides when to propagate tags from one information object to another. My plan is to implement these in TaskTracer, an existing extension of the Microsoft Windows user interface (UI) for desktop information management. Finally, I intend to assess the effectiveness of the system through controlled user studies.
