SUMMARY:ASCE : Host-a-Student Dinner
DESCRIPTION:<blockquote>\n <p>\n <strong>OSU ASCE Chapter</strong> host
s the annual Host A Student Dinner with the Oregon Chapter. Students from O
SU\, PSU\, OIT\, and UP\, in addition to area practicing engineers are all
invited.\n This is a great opportunity for students to meet and network
 with Civil Engineers!\n </p>\n <p>\n 6pm social\; 7pm dinner\n </p>\n
<p>\n <u>Speaker</u>: Dr. Tona Rodriguez-Nikl\, OSU School of Civil an
d Construction Engineering\n </p>\n <p>\n In the civil engineering pro
fession there is a well-deserved and growing interest in sustainability. Ho
wever\, there are varying ideas about what “sustainability” means and t
here are an\n overwhelming number of products\, services\, and research
results claiming to be “green” or “sustainable”. How do engineers\,
experts in their area of practice\, but certainly not experts in\n sust
ainability\, choose among alternatives or know they are doing something use
ful? The main aim of this talk is to sort through current trends to bring t
ogether a coherent and useful picture of\n sustainability and to suggest
some simple questions any engineer can ask to determine whether the option
he or she is pursuing is indeed sustainable. Examples from many areas of c
ivil engineering\n will be used to illustrate various aspects of sustain
 ability.&nbsp\;\n </p>\n <p>\n Tona Rodriguez-Nikl is an Instructor in
the School of Civil &amp\; Construction Engineering at Oregon State Univer
sity. Dr. Rodriguez-Nikl’s educational background includes Bachelor and M
aster of\n Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of C
alifornia at Berkeley\, and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the Univ
ersity of California\, San Diego\, where he developed and\n tested carbo
n fiber retrofits to protect reinforced concrete buildings against bombblas
ts. Dr. Rodriguez-Nikl has worked in industry for WJE in the San Francisco
 area performingstructural\n evaluations\, forensic investigations\, and
structural analyses. He teaches statics\,structural dynamics\, and a freshm
an computation course. Dr. Rodriguez-Nikl is a member of ASCE and the Ameri
can\n Concrete Institute where he serves on committees in Sustainability
of Concrete\, Fiber Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement\, and Concrete with R
ecycled Materials as well as the Structural Engineering\n Institute’s
