SUMMARY:Finding measures of Improvement in Myositis
DESCRIPTION:<p>\n A study is planned to develop measures of improvement fo
r myositis\, a rheumatological disease. There are many possible measures ba
sed on combinations of 6 core set variables. I will discuss\n the plans fo
r this study and how to find the best set of improvement measures that is c
 onsistent with reasonable statistical practice.\n</p>

DESCRIPTION:<p>\n The College of Oceanic &amp\; Atmospheric Sciences will
host a reunion of OSU's discoverers of deep sea hydrothermal vents. The inc
redible discovery of warm springs and exotic life on the ocean\n floor was
made in 1977 near the Galapagos Islands by a team of scientists led by OSU
oceanographer Jack Corliss.&nbsp\;Corliss will visit OSU on Nov. 3\, 2009
and other members of the discovery team\n will participate in a reunion.\n
</p>\n<p>\n The event will take place on Tue.\, 3 Nov. from 11 a.m. to 12:
30 p.m. in OSU's Burt Hall Room 193 on the corner of SW 26th Street\, Arnol

SUMMARY:Design Issues in Natural Resources Statistical Consulting
DESCRIPTION:<p>\n Control of experimental material and implementation of t
reatments is many times easier on paper than it is in practice.&nbsp\; I di
scuss the\n constraints and trade-offs involved in designing experiments i
n ecology in the context of two particular cases.&nbsp\; The first case is
the first U.S.-based experiment on the\n effectiveness of changing turbine
cut-in speed on reducing bat fatality at wind turbines. Our objectives wer
e to 1) determine if delaying turbine rotation until winds had reached pre-
determined\n speeds would result in fewer bat fatalities\, and 2) determin
e the economic costs of the delay.&nbsp\; We defined three treatments that
were of operational interest and that could be\n implemented at a turbine
over an entire night.&nbsp\; I will discuss unique conditions that muddied
the definition of the experimental unit\, prevented consistent application
of the\n treatments and introduced bias into our observations.&nbsp\; And
I will discuss how we addressed these issues in our study design. The secon
d case involves genetics studies\, in which\n seedlings collected from cer
tain locations are assumed to be genetically adapted to those particular si
te conditions.&nbsp\; They are then planted at other sites\, of varying ‘
ecological\n distance’ from their origins and traits reflecting their pr
oductivity are measured and compared.&nbsp\; The objectives are to 1) separ
ate site factors from genetic factors that lead to\n optimal productivity\
, and 2) predict productivity in the face of climate change.&nbsp\; In this
study the distinction between random and fixed effects is blurred and what
constitutes\n true replication of a factor is not clear.&nbsp\;&nbsp\; I
discuss these issues and suggest potential approaches to analysis of data o
 f this type.\n</p>

SUMMARY:Incorporating Correlation for Multivariate Failure Time Data When C
 luster Size Is Large
DESCRIPTION:<p>\n We propose a new estimation method for multivariate fail
ure time data using the quadratic inference function (QIF) approach. The pr
oposed method efficiently\n incorporates within-cluster correlations. Ther
efore it is more efficient than those which ignore within-cluster correlati
on. Furthermore\, the proposed method is easy to implement. Unlike the\n w
eighted estimating equations in Cai and Prentice (1995)\, it is not necessa
ry to explicitly estimate the correlation parameters. This simplification i
s particularly useful in analyzing data with\n large cluster size where it
is difficult to estimate intracluster correlation. Under certain regularit
y conditions\, we show the consistency and asymptotic normality of the prop
osed QIF estimators.\n A Chi-squared test is also developed for hypothesis
testing. We conduct extensive Monte Carlo simulation studies to assess the
finite sample performance of the proposed methods. We also illustrate\n t
he proposed methods by analyzing a primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) data.\n<
