Our objectives wer e to 1) determine if delaying turbine rotation until winds had reached pre- determined\n speeds would result in fewer bat fatalities\, and 2) determin e the economic costs of the delay. \; We defined three treatments that were of operational interest and that could be\n implemented at a turbine over an entire night. \; I will discuss unique conditions that muddied the definition of the experimental unit\, prevented consistent application of the\n treatments and introduced bias into our observations. \; And I will discuss how we addressed these issues in our study design. Scientists in recent\n years have begun to notice that with t he leading predators’ removal\, balance is often lost in those ecosystems \, sometimes with devastating consequences. The loss of wolves in Yellowsto ne National\n Park\, for instance\, allowed elk to badly overgraze lands a nd ravish entire terrestrial ecosystems\; the loss of wolves in Scotland ga ve rise to growth of red deer populations so massive that they\n are close to the food-limiting carrying capacity of the land and have serious conseq uences on native Scots pine and birch regeneration. The “landscapes of fe ar” created by big predators\, scientists\n now say\, helps not only to control the populations of grazing animals but also their behavior. The thr eat of predation and attack can fundamentally change the movement and activ ities of grazing\n animals 24 hours a day\, 365 days a year\, in ways that such approaches as human hunting fail to do.\n\n\n \;\n\n\n Pro fessor William Ripple\, from the OSU College of Forestry\, has pioneere d this area of research\, with groundbreaking studies in Yellowstone\, Olympi c\, Yosemite\, Wind Cave\, and Zion national parks. He and other resear chers recently\n proposed a reintroduction of the wolf in the Scottish Hig hlands in an experiment designed to determine whether the animal can check red deer populations and return the ecosystem to what it was 250\n years a go.
